Quick answer: Barcelona has a run of city beaches stretching north from Barceloneta, the liveliest and most central, through the quieter Nova Icària, Bogatell and Mar Bella. For more space, take a short train south to Castelldefels or on to Sitges. From Barcelona Airport (BCN) the easiest route is the Aeróbus to Plaça de Catalunya, then Metro line 4 to the seafront, around an hour in total.

Barcelona's city beaches: which is which

Barcelona's beachfront runs for several kilometres along the Mediterranean, from Barceloneta in the south to the Fòrum in the north. Most of these beaches were created or reshaped for the 1992 Olympics, and today they are clean, sandy and well equipped, with showers, seasonal lifeguards, beach bars and a promenade. The further north you walk from Barceloneta, the calmer and more local they tend to feel.

Barceloneta and the central beaches

Barceloneta is the classic Barcelona beach: closest to the old town, backed by seafood restaurants and bars, and always busy in summer. Beside it, the older Sant Sebastià and Sant Miquel beaches are just as central. This is the area for atmosphere, people-watching and an easy walk from the Gothic Quarter, though it is also the most crowded.

Quieter beaches: Nova Icària, Bogatell and Mar Bella

Walk or ride a few minutes north and the crowds thin out. Nova Icària, by the Olympic Port, is family-friendly and relaxed. Bogatell is popular with locals and well kept, and Mar Bella is younger and sportier, with a marked clothing-optional section. All are clean, sandy and reachable on Metro line 4.

Beyond the city: Castelldefels and Sitges

For more space and clearer water, leave the city. Castelldefels, a short train ride south, has a long, wide sandy beach popular with families. A little further, the resort town of Sitges mixes pretty beaches with a charming old centre and a lively scene. Both make easy half-day or day trips and are well connected by train.

How to get there from Barcelona Airport

From Barcelona Airport (BCN), the simplest route to Barceloneta and the city beaches is the Aeróbus to Plaça de Catalunya, then Metro line 4 (yellow) a couple of stops to Barceloneta or the Olympic-port beaches. You can also take the R2 Nord train from the airport to Passeig de Gràcia or Sants and change to the metro. Either way, allow around an hour. For Castelldefels, the same R2 train line runs south from the city.
