General Airport Information
Barcelona International Airport, officially named Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport, is the main aviation hub serving the Catalan capital and the surrounding region. Located approximately 15 km / 9.3 miles southwest of Barcelona’s city center, BCN Airport handles an extensive network of domestic, European, and intercontinental flights.
Barcelona Airport is the second busiest airport in Spain and one of the largest airports along the Mediterranean coast. It welcomes tens of millions of passengers every year and serves as a key gateway to Southern Europe. Thanks to its strategic location, modern infrastructure, and wide airline presence, BCN Airport plays a crucial role in both tourism and business travel.
Terminals
Barcelona Airport consists of two main terminal buildings: Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2). The terminals are not adjacent, but they are connected landside via a free shuttle bus service operating 24/7.
Terminal 1 (T1) is the airport’s primary and most modern terminal, handling the majority of international, Schengen, and long-haul flights. It offers a wide range of services, shopping areas, dining options, and passenger amenities.
Terminal 2 (T2) is divided into three sections (T2A, T2B, and T2C) and mainly serves domestic flights, non-Schengen routes, and most low-cost carriers. Although older, the terminal is functional and well-organized.
Hotels
Barcelona offers a wide variety of accommodation options to suit all budgets and travel styles. Travelers can choose between hotels located near Barcelona Airport for maximum convenience or stay in the city center and surrounding districts.
Due to excellent transport connections, including metro, train, bus, and taxi services, staying in central Barcelona is often just as practical as staying near the airport, with average travel times ranging from 20 to 35 minutes.
Layover at the Airport
Barcelona Airport is well-suited for layovers of any duration. With its extensive services, lounges, restaurants, shops, and free Wi-Fi, even long stopovers can be comfortable and productive.
If your layover is long enough, you can easily leave the airport and visit Barcelona’s highlights, such as Plaça de Catalunya, La Rambla, or the beachfront, thanks to the airport’s efficient transport links. Whether you stay inside the terminal or explore the city, BCN Airport offers flexibility and convenience for all types of travelers.
